10 Days From Casablanca's Waves to Marrakech's Chaos, With the Sahara in Between
Casablanca
Welcome to Morocco. Your private driver meets you at the airport and brings you to the hotel. Depending on your flight, you may visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the few in the country open to visitors, or simply relax along the Corniche before the adventure begins.
After breakfast, we head north to Rabat, Morocco's elegant seaside capital. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V, marble and cedar and gold, invites whispers. The Hassan Tower reaches unfinished toward the sky. The Kasbah of the Udayas, white and blue, tumbles down to the Atlantic. In the afternoon, the road carries us through rolling countryside into the Rif Mountains, green hills rising, until Chefchaouen appears, blue and serene, our peaceful retreat for the night.
Fez
Morning light turns Chefchaouen's walls into sapphire and indigo. We stroll quiet streets, meet local artisans, drink coffee in the main square. In the afternoon, we descend from the mountains toward Fes, one of Morocco's oldest and most fascinating cities, waiting to reveal itself.
Fes: The Imperial Heart
Today we step back in time. Our local guide leads us through Fes el-Bali, a living museum of craftsmanship and culture. The Royal Palace gates, gold and zellige, dazzle. The Jewish Quarter whispers of multicultural pasts. Workshops of weavers, potters, and brass artists pull us in, hands moving in rhythms learned from grandfathers. The tanneries, pungent and colorful, men waist-deep in dyes unchanged for centuries. Afterward, our riad or a traditional hammam offers rest.
A day of changing landscapes. We cross the Middle Atlas, pass through Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco," and the cedar forests where Barbary apes watch from branches. South through Midelt, then the Ziz Valley explodes green, palms and kasbahs lining the river. By evening, Merzouga. We trade the car for camels, ride into Erg Chebbi as the sun falls, sand shifting from gold to violet. Dinner and overnight in a desert camp, stars ablaze above us.
Todgha Gorge
We wake before dawn, climb a dune, watch the Sahara wake from grey to gold. After breakfast, west through Erfoud, Morocco's "date capital," then the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. By afternoon, Todgha Gorge, sheer walls soaring 350 meters above the riverbed. We walk the canyon floor, voices bouncing off stone older than memory. Night in a guesthouse, palm groves whispering around us.
Through the Dades Valley, past villages famous for roses. Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Morocco," studios and kasbahs sharing the same dust. Then Aït Ben Haddou, the extraordinary fortified village of clay and straw, a UNESCO treasure that starred in more films than most actors. We climb to the top, the desert plains stretching forever. Night in a nearby kasbah lodge, the silence deep and old.
Today we cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, the highest in Africa. Terraced fields and Berber hamlets line the winding descent. Then Marrakech, the Red City, vibrant and loud. We check into our riad and dive straight into Jemaa el-Fna, storytellers and snake charmers and sizzling grills, dinner amid the chaos, an experience like no other.
Marrakech Exploration
Our private guide leads us through the Red City. Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, the lively souks. The afternoon is ours: a hammam, the Majorelle Garden, or mint tea on a rooftop, the city humming below, the sky turning pink.
Departure
Our Moroccan adventure ends. Depending on the flight, we depart from Marrakech or Casablanca, the driver coordinating every detail. We take with us the colors, sounds, and warmth of Morocco, memories that will stay forever.
Ten days from the Atlantic to the Atlas to the Sahara and back. Morocco leaves its fingerprints on us, and we are glad
